Website Development Guidelines

Mike Paetzold asked:

There are a variety of ways involved in developing a website. Designing, implementing, and maintaining a website require a great deal of thought and consideration. It is essential to keep some things in perspective. As a webmaster or a web developer, you need to keep certain goals in mind like user or visitor experience, site navigation, website impression, and website connectivity and reliability. These goals are set for the benefit of your website’s visitors. When an individual visits your site, they should never feel lost or out of place. They should be comfortable navigating through your website. That is how you get people to remember your website.

As a rule of thumb for many web developers, do not annoy visitors to your website with unnecessary animated or visual graphics, or extremely slow page loading. Most Internet users tend to avoid websites like those, because of one obvious reason; it is a waste of time. People will most like lose interest in browsing through your website if you welcome their first visit with excessive and unnecessary graphics or artwork that have nothing to do with the site’s content.

One of the essential factors of a successful website is picking a domain name that is witty, captivating, and most of all, easy to remember. The shorter the domain name, the better. Another good thing about having your own catchy domain name is you can associate it with email addresses, which will give your website a more professional feel.

User-friendly navigation is another essential factor in a successful website. The way you place your website links should be clear, simple, and easy-to-read or comprehend. The menu location should be consistent and traditional; do not go against the grain. In website development, no one can achieve anything by going against the grain. One more thing, always provide a way for visitors to easily go back to the main page of your website. Do not let your visitors go through hoops just to get what they are looking for in your website.

Readability and printability is also important in a website. Do not give your visitors headaches by letting them read through multi-colored texts on your site. People are having headaches already just staring at the monitor from hours on end;a don’t make things worse. Always remember that a bright colored background with dark colored text is much easier on the eyes compared to the other way around. Your website should also have a printer-friendly content. Most people go through a website to gather information, so make it easy for them to do just that. Every page or content should have an alternate printable page, in case visitors want a hard copy of a particular content on your website.

Read about successful people.
